Fake News is a scourge on a free society, threatens the credibility of creators and publishers everywhere, and is, accordingly, forbidden on Outlit. We will take steps to remove it when we find it and count on you to help in this important task.

The dissemination of Fake News is not a new phenomenon. The first elections in the United States hundreds of years ago were the same rife breeding grounds for fake news as today.

There is truth, there is opinion, and there is false information, and some want to blur the line between these. Those who seek to do that are perpetrators of fake news. Information that is spread online that is false is fake news.

Social networks like Facebook have already failed the world once and they haven proven to be breeding grounds for fake news. Facebook and many others have created their networks to be susceptible to the scourge of fake news.

Outlit helps to prevent and eliminate fake news but the struggle to defeat it is real. Outlit forbids the dissemination of fake news and will take action against false information and fake news whenever we are made aware of it. We will take swift and decisive action against those who create and spread fake news.

Here’s how we fight fake news:

-Providing a SourceRep for each source and voice on Outlit. The SourceRep displays the trustworthiness of the source and is on all feeds, stories, and profiles. Only on Outlit are sources ranked from most trustworthy to least. To learn more about SourceReps and how they are calculated, visit our section on source trustworthiness in our knowledge base.

-Banning fake news dissemination as soon as we are made aware of it.

-Donating I’ll-gotten earnings to Charities to protect and empower journalists and creators.

-Actively alerting the community and world of fake storylines on Outlit

Like any democracy and forum for free speech and the sharing of ideas, it takes work to keep this space free of hate speech, racism, and calls to violence. As a member of the Outlit community, we need your help to identify prohibited activity and helps us to police this network. We are not responsible for any content posted by any users, RSS feeds, or accounts on Outlit, but we will work to remove violations of our terms of service and house rules swiftly.

  • How does Outlit (the company) Make Money?

“The only reason a business exists is to make money.”
    -Kevin O’Leary, Shark Tank

OK, let's answer this question as directly as possible: Outlit is an information marketplace - the first ever of its kind. We allow publishers of any size a way to earn for their content directly from the readers, or consumers, of the content. And we do all of that by giving the readers/consumers choices they've never had before.

Outlit earns after creators are successful in monetizing their content. If you publish on Outlit, you have the opportunity for two revenue streams: from advertisers and from payments from readers directly. After creators earn, Outlit takes a small fraction of either, leaving the lion's share of earnings to the creator.

Like any virtual marketplace, and just like a real marketplace, there are costs to what we do. Things like servers, providing a secure service, growing the network and providing readers with great stories and creators with a space to tell those stories come with costs. We don’t want you to see the sausage being made - you probably don’t want to see it, either! But we need to earn to keep this grand experiment in storytelling alive, well, and thriving.

The bottom line: if you don’t make money, we’ll go out of business. So, get out there and publish your story!

  • What is the Outlit Story?

Outlit launched our first web product in the Spring of 2014 as the first ever “iTunes for news” from many sources in the United States, with participation from over 40 newspapers and magazines. Each member of our team put in a lot of hard work to get a very simple product to a limited number of users. But we needed to find out whether we could sell full articles to readers, “on demand”, for a few pennies each, just like iTunes does for music. We did. We started seeing bloggers join Outlit and start telling their stories and earning from their readers. We began to prove that some people were willing to pay on-demand for stories, and we were the first to prove this here in the United States, where readers are less inclined to pay than other markets.

We knew this was just the beginning - just one piece of a vibrant publishing marketplace and community. Since we built that simple news reading experiment, we’ve evolved to become much more - a discovery and discussion network for stories where readers can see what they want to see and interact on what matters. We’ve grown Outlit to be the social network for the creative and the curious. Outlit lets you clip stories from sources around the web to your followers, giving you a unique and noise-free social reading experience where you can read and react with friends. Other social networks are for social news - and the future of news reading and discovery can’t be something where you see personal photos, game invites, and other distractions on other social networks.

Best of all - Outlit is the first and only social publishing network where creators are empowered to earn from readers who can access any story instantly with new choices. Creators can earn from unintrusive ads, on-demand micropayments, or monthly all-access subscriptions from loyal readers. Anyone can publish and earn on Outlit.

In that way, we still think of this project in the same way we have since the day we were founded: Outlit is a big experiment in the future of social storytelling and digital journalism. Our goal is to provide a new way to discover, discuss, and publish with friends and the Outlit community.
