    Friends
on Outlit are people you are choosing to read with here. Your friends feed shows clipped stories from your friends.

We use the term “follow” for all sources regardless of whether they are publications, writers, bloggers, journalists, or RSS feeds.

You can follow anything, but your friends feed is sacred. We built Outlit as a much-needed social network to take on Facebook and other social networks that were and are NOT built or optimized for social story discovery. Outlit is built as the social network where great stories live.

Your friends feed is stories that are shared (“clipped”) by your friends, or people you follow (not publications).

Stories directly published by major sources or rss feeds are in your stories feed, while your friends feed is a space for you and your friends on Outlit to discuss stories and topics that matter. Use your friends feed read and discuss stories with friends. It’s your little curated town square where stories and ideas are brought to you by people and voices you want to read with.

It’s a little tough to explain, but, we think, easy to intuit. One more time:

outl.it/friends = stories and posts shared by your friends and people you follow on outlit

other feeds on Outlit = stories and posts from sources (i.e. publications) you follow

Outlit is one space for all the sources and voices that matter to you.

Outlit lets you follow and read stories from:

    • Publishers, magazines, and news outlets around the world with full content hosted natively on Outlit
    • Original stories, reports, and ideas from bloggers, writers, and original journalists
    • RSS feeds of any publishers or outlets that aren’t on Outlit (add them on your own if they’re missing - we may allow others to follow RSS feeds you might add once we’ve reviewed the feed)
    • Anything and anyone else you can imagine

Outlit has original voices and sources that you can’t find anywhere else - but we know that to be your favorite place to discover and discuss content and stories that matter to you and friends, we can’t just have original stories, but any and all stories that exist out there, even if they’re clips or previews of a full story hosted elsewhere.

Yeah, this is a radical new and powerful platform for story discovery and discussion - but the future of journalism and great stories depends on it. When creators of any size have a place to publish stories and earn alongside the biggest and smallest, a true marketplace for stories and ideas is available to the world to support content in their own way.

This is the future we’ve built on Outlit.

  • The Outlit Frontpage: What is the Outlit Frontpage and How do Stories Get There?

When you see a story around the Outlit network from any type of creator, a voting button on each section allows you change what the world sees. YOU decide what is newsworthy, interesting, or important and with every up (or down!) vote you are helping to increase that story’s visibility to the community.

So, that’s what Outlit’s frontpage is: a feed of stories that are popular as voted upon by the Outlit community. These are stories that are important to the world, as defined by the people of the world. Outlit also shows stories here curated for you by Outlit’s team to show you stories you may have missed or that deserve more attention.

Stories may be removed from the Frontpage, like all other pages, if they are found to be in violation of our terms of service or house rules.
